A small delegation from the teak deck manufacturer Wolz Nautic witnessed the starting gun of this year's “RUND UM” on Lake Constance from close up at their position on the historic steam ship "Hohentwiel".
The “Hohentwiel” has functioned for many years as the starting line. All competitors have to position themselves, behind the Hohenwiel's bow before the starting gun for the night regatta is fired at around 7.30 pm.
The “RUND UM” proved once again to be a real attraction, with people crowding the lake as well as its shore. In spite of the extremely hot and humid temperatures, a huge number of water sports enthusiasts assembled in Lindau in order to see the start and finish of the race.
But what can you do when the lake is calm after the starting gun and there is no wind? ... Except sit back and wait...
For all regatta competitors this meant a wait of about half an hour before the first high-speed catamarans could take advantage of the initial tentative winds and start to move on the lake. A little later the wind gathered strength and a massive thunderstorm developed on the horizon on the Swiss side of the lake. This change in the weather provided sufficient wind for all the boats to move off. The regatta could finally begin.
The Hohentwiel followed the race for a while as escort ship, but then turned back in the direction of Lindau to avoid heading directly into the thunderstorm. However, the boat could not reach the harbour in Lindau before the rain began as the rain and thunder clouds moved faster than the Hohentwiel's steam engine could propel the ship.
All things considered, a very exciting experience!
